MS Visual Studio 2015 Locking Up on Copy Web Site

I was recently using Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 in Windows 10 to update some website code.  Upon finishing, the new file needed to be uploaded to the website.

The Problem

Upon copying the file from the local disk to the website server, Visual Studio 2015 would hang and have to be shut down via the Task Manager.

The steps for copying the file were:

  • From the VS2015 file menu, choose Website, then Copy Web Site…”.
  • Establish a connection to the website server.
  • Select the desired file(s) to be copied and perform the copy.

The Workaround

This is not the solution, but simply a workaround based on suggestions posted on the Visual Studio Forum.

  1. Delete the FTP Connection Log which is stored at
    C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\YourProjectName.
  2. From the VS2015 file menu, choose Website, then Copy Web Site…”.
  3. Establish a connection to the website server.
  4. Select the desired file(s) to be copied and perform the copy.
    • The Copy Web Site window locks up making it impossible to click the “disconnect” button.
  5. Close the Copy Web Site window.

This error message appears.
Save Copy Web State 2

Visual Studio will still be open and working after dismissing this dialog box. Open the website in a browser and verify that the copy was successful.

Until this is fixed with a Visual Studio 2015 update, happy workaround!
